English is Easy

Lately, too many times I heard people saying “you know me so well”…yeah, a well-known part of lyric by a newly born boy band namely SM*SH. To be sure, once I googled about the band, millions of links related to it appeared. This band broadly became a virus which infected television and radio as well. Either teenagers or preteens are nuts about the band. This is simply a phenomenon nowadays.

I am not a Sm*sh Blast nor a music expert, but little bit curios on why this male vocal group become raising star in a relatively very short time. The band can break through nimbly the very tough competition in music industry. Through my brief thinking, some lessons spring to my mind – and I think it’s worth to share.

First, the term boy band is deliberately defined as popular music act consisting of about 3-6 male performers. Despite the term "band", boy band members usually do not play musical instruments, either in recording sessions or on stage, although exceptions do exist. This definition along with its interpretation lures many criticisms. Critics deem boy band as good-looking performer instead of good singer. After all, mostly the performers of boy band are –relatively – cute enough and the admiration almost merely comes from it. No wonder, teenagers (who are mentally labile so what makes their eyes amazed becomes their importantly favorite artist) stay at the front line of huge fan of a boy band. Then this fact might create envy amid “common bands” which have less attention due to unimpressive physical appearance. In fact, appearance plays significant role to be a success performer.

Anyway, that is just a nature of competition to attract fans as many as their songs can be listened to. SM*SH – for example – is able to stand tall and fight against the competition no matter the pros and cons addressed to it. Now we can see the band oftentimes coloring our environment. This is due to their persistence to grow up instead of being busy with any destructive criticism. So keep moving forward!

Second, the trend now is that the Indonesian singers, composers and everyone involved in music industry are preferably putting some catchy words from other languages such as “aishiteru”,” I just wanna say ILU”, “ you know me so well”, etc. I just thought that our people are going to be more English-aware. This could be the good news to create English based environment to face globalization era which merges any national borders. Foreign expressions or terms will be more familiar with Indonesians’ ears. Gradually no longer becomes an allergy. It’s because foreign languages (esp. English) are not there..but here…around us. So, to boost you into a better English, set an English based environment. Better start from easy and simple things.

Third, type of song which is produced and widely accepted by Indonesian is mostly the trivial one. Unimportant content dominates the lyric. Some songs even offer impolite and improper lyrics to hear. Some are nothing but junk. So sparkling at the first time it is released, but as the time goes it merely becomes short story, not everlasting one. The problem is miraculously that kind of songs hypnotize the majority of citizens. They are on the top chart of most listened songs for several weeks. I am longing a song which is worthy and beautiful just like Ebiet G Ade’s songs. Beauty blends with wisdom. Entertaining at the same time encouraging people to have a better understanding about life – and love as well.

Then I start questioning, should be there Ebit’s next generation who sings wonderfully and initializes quality song to this nation? I believe you can guess the answer of my rhetoric. Because you know me so well...^___^
